After leaving the city, Ataru had taken the reins on the road.

Based on what Franphilia had told him, it was going to be a long journey, and Ataru had offered to take the reins, thinking that if Caro was the only one in charge, it would be a problem if something happened.

Instead, Caro would be responsible for dealing with any monsters found along the way.

Up until now, Ataru has been riding on the top of the wagon and shooting enemies from afar with bullets, but now Caro will be using the magic she has learned to defeat them.

It was not as long as Ataru's long-range attack, but it was still enough to practice magic.

“Caro has really gotten good at magic too.
……”

Ataru muttered to himself as if he were a parent watching his child grow up.
By that time, the number of monsters that Caro had killed had already reached two digits.

“I feel like my range of strategies has expanded now that I've learned magic!”

Caro, who came back looking happy, did not fight with magic alone, nor did she fight with weapons alone, but dexterously combined the two to fight well.

“You seem to have a good handle on using magic as a distraction or releasing magic and slashing from another direction.
I think it's a good way to fight.”

Smiling gently, Ataru commented on Caro's fighting style.

Attacking with weapons alone can become somewhat monotonous, and when you get used to it, your opponent will be able to read your moves.
The current Caro, however, has added magic as an accent, making it difficult to read her movements.

“Thank you very much! I'm so happy to be praised by Master Ataru!”

That was Caro's honest opinion.
Caro believes that Ataru's judgment is trustworthy in battle, and she also admires him because he has helped her find herself, so she is happy about that as well.
Her long ears were twitching with joy.

“I hope I can expand the range of my combat too.
……”

As he said this, Ataru was maneuvering the carriage while looking at the list of bullets.
In the case of Ataru, his weapon of choice is a gun, so having a variety of bullets at the ready can lead to a wider range of fighting styles.

“I think Ataru-sama is strong enough, but ……”

Both of the fights against the monsters that attacked the city and against the golem could not have been won without Ataru.
It's not only Caro, but most of the people who participated in those battles thought that.

“It might have been enough to use haphazard force, but that doesn't mean it will work every time.
I think it's good to have a back-up plan, and then a back-up plan, and then another back-up plan.”

“I see.
……”

Ataru, who has so much power, is not proud of his power and is searching for the next power and the next way to fight.
It was a great source of inspiration for Caro.

“I'll do my best to be as good as Ataru-sama!”

“Hmm? Oh, oh.
Good luck?”

Ataru couldn’t understand what was going through her mind, so he simply tilted his head and said that to her.

Since they were on the road while training, they were moving at a slow pace, and before night fell, they decided to set up camp just before the forest.
It seemed to be an area where travelers took a rest, and there were already people ahead of them, who were preparing to camp.

“You guys are going to camp here too?”

The man who had called out to me was one of several.
Ataru could see that they were a group of merchants and guards, and that the wagons parked nearby were loaded with what appeared to be their goods, but Ataru felt something strange about the atmosphere they created.

“Yeah, that's the plan.
According to the map I bought in town, it looks like there are only a few places where we can take a rest but not camp for a while.”

Ataru, keeping a certain distance, replied as he recalled the map.

“Well, I guess so.
……
I know we just met and all, but if you could, could you camp somewhere away from our camp?”

Neither of them knew the other.
If they were to rest in close proximity, they would have to be on maximum alert for each other in addition to their surroundings.
This was the reason for the suggestion, and Ataru knew it, so he nodded his head.

“I know.
We'll rest over there.
See you.”

Ataru had originally planned to rest at the foot of a large tree, and he moved away from the other man, unconcerned with his wary response.

“Ataru-sama……”

While Ataru and Caro are moving in a straightforward manner, the men are looking at Ataru and Caro as if they are inspecting them.
Caro felt their gaze and called out his name worriedly, but Ataru just shook his head and did not say anything.

When they reached the foot of the tree, they dismounted and removed their equipment so that the horses could rest.

“Caro, I've heard that's the normal ……
attitude of those kind of guys.
I just didn't expect them to look at us all the way through.”

Ataru quickly took the tent out of the magic bag and prepared it for resting, speaking so that only Caro could hear.

“Yes ……
I felt the same as Ataru-sama, that he was watching me all the time.
But I thought it was a little strange to be so wary.
……”

Caro said with a troubled expression that something was wrong, but Ataru's view was different.

“That's not being cautious, maybe they're observing us as prey.
……”

They might be trying to find out if Ataru and Caro have money, or if they have anything of value.
They might be searching for that.
That was Ataru's prediction.
The first thing that struck him as strange was that for a merchant, he seemed to have a very battle-hardened air about him.

“I see.
……
That might have been a sharp look, if you say so.”

Ataru's words made Caro think of the men again.
It seemed to have a presence that was distinctly different from the merchants she had seen in the past.

“Well, maybe I'm just worrying too much, but ……
just in case, you know.”

As soon as he finished setting up the tent for resting, Ataru proceeded to lay a trap.

“That's right.
And in case they approach us without malice, it might be better to call out to them first or have a sign.”

Ataru nodded in response to Caro's suggestion that an explanation would avoid unnecessary conflict.

“I'll go to ……
and talk to them first.
That way, if they're up to something, they might not come.”

Ataru headed for the camp of the men he had just left, leaving only the finishing touches to his trap.

“Can Caro wait here for me? I don't want anyone to get to my luggage or carriage while I'm over there.

“Okay, be careful.”

Ataru will not be so easily beaten, so Caro nodded in reply and continued to prepare the camp, paying attention to the surrounding area.
